We're first introduced to Brooke, what most teens associate their sweet sixteen to be was the complete opposite for Brooke Carson, everything was for show, and show only, no one could see the cracks appearing within their empire, a crumbling business, a second hand dress, it was all an elaborate charade all in the name of social standing.
Stepping out of the ball room to compose herself Brooke stumbles upon a man getting beaten up, without thinking of the dangerous situation she was putting herself into and wanting to do the right thing she steps out from where she was hidden, and yells to the attacker that she’s called the police. One thing leads to another and she’s then shoved into a van along with the man that’s barely holding onto his life.
But that’s all to change after the second beating dished out, and now Brooke is being held captive by a murderer. Things escalate out of control, thinking he's going to kill her, he releases her but takes her mobile phone with a warning that if she tells them about him he will kill the people in her contact list and she knows without a shadow of a dealt that he means it.
Stone Keaton is on a mission for vengeance all in the name of protecting his brothers who were held captive in a basement for ten years, abused, the lost boys who everyone forgot about. But they are slowly closing in on all the men involved. The last thing Stone wants is to fall in love, but what he doesn't expect is Brooke.
We don't do connections with women - that's the pact we made early on. No girlfriends, no families, no children, no white picket fences. We're too far gone for that, too ruined, too twisted. We're brothers till the end out for vengeance.
He can't stop thinking about her, he takes risks just to see her. A man obsessed.
This for me started off really slow, which took me a while to get into/connect with the storyline and the characters themselves, it wasn't until it reached about half way that it started to come into its own and picked up in pace. It also states that this can be read as a standalone but personally I think the first book probably needs to be read to fully understand the dynamics of these broken boys/characters. Because even though this was reasonably easy to follow I'm guessing a lot went down in the first book that was glossed over in this one.
This by any means wasn't what I would peg as dark though it did have some gritty elements I kind of wished for a wee bit more, but it was still an enjoyable read all in all.
