Is the first full length post apocalypse book in the (Solar Apocalypse) series by author Baileigh Higgins. Spoken in multiple POV's.
I grabbed this on ku when it released but held off jumping in because I wanted the next book ready and waiting.
Every time a recommendation comes up on what to read in this genre, this author is always the first to be mentioned, and I get it, I really do, because the books I have read by her I’ve really enjoyed and this book solidifies why she is most people’s choice when recommending her.
This book did not disappoint, it’s a page turner of epic proportions, it was insanely intense, the author came at us full force and let rip, it's action packed galore, likeable characters and an unforgettable storyline which pulls you in..Many times my heart inherited an extra beat to its rhythm.
Workaholic structural engineer forty-two year old Mara was in her office working when the solar flare hits destroying all electronics, phones, computers, and cars are all fried, which quickly escalated unrest within the city, her very first thought was to get to her estranged daughter Zoe who lives with Jeremy her ex-husband 400 miles away. On her precarious travels on foot she meets up with a nurse named Emily, an old farmer named Thomas and a young girl named Lily. Along the way this misfit group form a strong bond.
But Zara and her father don't stay at home after a home invasion forces their hands because within no time at all their neighbourhood sinks into despair with hunger and volatile people out for themselves. Jeremy's thoughts are to head sixty miles north where his family's isolated old cabin sits. But Zoe's best friend and her family also want to leave the neighbourhood and join Zoe and her father.
What I found really weird is that Jeremy owned a hardware store so I was kind of a bit surprised that he didn't have items on hand at home, because those stores are a treasure trove of numerous survival items.
Our heroine had her flaws but she stepped up to the challenges facing her and tackled them all in her stride. Even when she had to break down her old walls and like a chrysalis she became a new and improved version of herself. From doing things alone she adopted strangers along her journey as she searched for her daughter they became family not by blood but by surviving.
This was such a strong start to this series and I am so invested in the storyline and the characters plus my love for this author to keep on going..If you've not read this author before I highly recommend it.
