I saw this pop up a few times on here, this year is about me discovering new authors and trying genres I've not read before and this one fits that box perfectly, it definitely lived up to the hype with the reviews and posts I'd been seeing about this book. This pulled me in straight away, I’m glad I took that plunge and took a chance on this book, it definitely won’t be the last book I read of this authors because I’ve already purchased another of hers.
“Miley Petrowski’s story was inspired by real events that took place in the summer of 1984.”
The story follows Miley, an Olympic biathlete, recovering from a shoulder injury suffered from a car accident, which put her dreams on hold of nabbing an Olympic gold medal who takes a summer job at The Frank Church Wilderness guess lodge nestled within a vast remote wilderness. The perfect place for Miley to rehabilitate and train whist earning money at the same time..
Her most troublesome thought out running was the attack of bears, because a few years back from this exact location a previous staff member nineteen year old Rayna had gone missing, her body was never recovered, but it points towards a bear attack.
So with a can of bear spray in hand whilst out on a run Miley didn't expect to be abducted by two unkempt men who dragged her back to their cabin way up in the mountains where her only survival was relying on her training, her true grit and strength and to survive to tell the boy who had been her best friend since they were young that she loved him.
But that boy was one to never to give up, and above all else as soon as he got that call that Miley was missing he never stopped searching for her..
The sheer terror, the fear, of what Miley endured, was the polar opposite to how I was feeling whilst reading this terrifying story, sitting comfortably and safe within my lounge, whilst she was kidnapped, by father and son survivalists living off-grid in the vast wilderness, she was chained, beaten.
Sickeningly, sadistic. Playing the game of being meek, trained, whilst plotting silently of escaping her confines.
This is definitely a must read.
